The Sir Douglas Quintet hadn’t had much success since moving from San Antonio to San Francisco after their first hit. So this song about a major pot-growing area in northern California was their last hit. Front man Doug Sahm became an important figure in the Tex-Mex music movement before he died in 1999. But you have to love that idiosyncratic hybrid mix of Tex-Mex/mod "sunshine" pop. Clearly a product of the mid-to-late-'60s.
