First done by Waylon Jennings in 1966 and a Top 10 country hit for Johnny Darrell in ‘67, this Mel Tillis-written song became a huge pop hit for Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. Everyone thinks this was about Vietnam, but Mel said it was set during the Korean War.
