Hag had been in and out of correctional facilities since the age of 13, even doing time in the notorious San Quentin prison for armed robbery. When that info became public, nobody made a big deal of it. While incarcerated at San Quentin in 1959, Merłe saw Johnny Cash perform there, and he said it changed his life.
